When I ran my Interior Design Studio, one of the most significant challenges I faced was retaining talented designers. It seemed like the best graduates from design colleges were quickly snatched up by top companies, leaving mid-sized studios like mine as mere training grounds. The constant cycle of training and losing designers was exhausting, and it felt like we were being taken advantage of.
To address this issue, I decided to make changes to our employment contracts. I made the offer letter a legally binding document, stipulating a minimum of two years of employment or requiring compensation if the contract was broken. I thought this would help mitigate the issue, but I soon realized that some employees still left without compensating the company.
At that point, I had to make a difficult decision. Pursuing a legal battle against the employee seemed like a costly and time-consuming endeavour that would result in a triple loss for me—losing both an employee, time and resources spent on the employee and now the additional cost on legal fees.
It became clear to me that I needed to adopt different strategies to reduce attrition and create a more positive work environment. I focused on employee recognition and appreciation, ensuring that their efforts and achievements were acknowledged and celebrated. I also provided professional development opportunities to help them grow and improve their skills.
Recognizing the importance of work-life balance, I encouraged reasonable work hours and promoted flexible schedules whenever possible. I made sure employees had the freedom to take time off for personal needs or family obligations, emphasizing the value of self-care. This shift in approach fostered a culture that valued the well-being of employees, and as a result, our attrition rate decreased considerably.
Learning from the challenges I faced, I realized that creating a supportive and nurturing work environment was key to retaining talented individuals. It was no longer just about legal binding contracts but about cultivating a culture of appreciation, growth, and work-life balance. By adopting these strategies, I was able to create a more sustainable and fulfilling workplace for my team.
